Esempi appunto per realizzare un plugin per IE...puó essere che siano
costrutti solo di IE?
Comunque alla fine ho risolto cosí (se puó interessare):

var shell = new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application");
    shell.ShellExecute("IE4RC.exe",external.menuArguments.event.srcElement,"C:\\Program
Files\\RemoteCalendars\\IE4RC\\");
